History of Bungalow Style Homes

Bungalow style homes were actually first built in India in the mid-nineteenth century by the British. The intent of the design was to create an informal, easily constructed home for travelers. The design featured low to the ground built homes with large porches covered by wide overhangs. They did not become popular in America until the turn of the century where they were first built in California.

The American style bungalows were built much like the British prototypes which included low pitched roofs and large porches. The bungalow met the needs of young families and first time home buyers. When the style started to become more popular, several companies even sold bungalow kits through mail order catalogs.

The Bungalow style home has become a great way for people looking for a small footprint with a ton of character in it. Now days the concept behind the idea is to make the home live big but not have all the wasted space that the McMansions have. The new designs make the home feel warm and comfortable and use even the smallest of places for useful space.

If you’re looking to downsize from your current house but don’t want to lose all the amenities of your large home, the bungalow style home is a great design that gives you all the luxuries that a large home would give.

Relay For Life of Olmsted County

For thoRelay for Lifese that don’t know, Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember those that lost to the disease and to fight back against the disease. The Relay For Life event is a way for the community to come together and support the fight against cancer. Large groups of people gather at the venue and camp out over night taking turns walking around the track to raise money. Each team is asked to set a fundraising goal and to have a member on the track at all times.

The Olmsted County Relay For Life starts this Friday (July 15) at 6:30 at the University Center. The event will start out with a Survivors Lap an inspirational time where cancer survivors are asked to come to the middle of the track and walk together. It is then followed by The Luminaria Ceremony where candles are lit and put in white paper bags that represent people who have been touched by cancer. Finally, the event is finished off with the Fight Back Ceremony. This is when teams start walking around the track raising money to fight cancer !

The event will last through the night till 6:30 am ! If you can make it down to the University Center for just a few laps it would be very much appreciated ! Come show your support for those fighting cancer and make a couple new friends.

Through Every Dark Night, There’s a Bright Day After That

With the economy going through tough times it’s hard for sellers to think about taking a hit on the sale of their home. A lot of sellers are worried about getting “low-ball” offers or having to pay for the closing costs of the buyers. In many cases, this is true. Buyers will put in very low offers to test the water and see how low the sellers will go, so in the end sellers end up taking less for their home then they wanted, thus not making as much on their home as they had hoped.

But people need to remember, “Through every dark night, there’s a bright day after that !” Now that you have your home sold, which can be the hardest part, you can now take advantage of the all time low constructions costs and build your dream home that you and your family can grow in to !

So when you really think about it, you may be taking less for the sale of your home, but in the end, you’ll be buying more of a home for the future. The new home you buy will be worth more when the economy turns then your previous home. You have to give a little to get a lot !

Building for the future !

With the large number of baby boomers turning 65 at a rate of 7,000 per day it might be time to start thinking about building for the future ! A majority of the homes that are out there today are not designed to accommodate the lifestyle of the aging public. The future trend for new homes will be designed to adapt to the lifestyle that is needed by adding a level entrance to the home and wider hallways and doors that leave enough room for wheelchairs or walkers.

You do not need to be in a wheelchair or walker to appreciate the new features that come with a handicap accessible home. Building for the future allows growing families to remain in their home for a longer time. Imagine building a home in an area that you love and having the home grow with you !

Model Home Open House 5/21-5/22

Benefits of New vs. Used homes

New Home

  • Current floorplans, architectural concepts and conveniences
  • Requires less maintenance and fewer repairs
  • Builder warranties and various manufacturer/supplier warranties
  • First 5 years, values in new neighborhoods rise more rapidly than in older ones
  • Easier to form friendships with your neighbors because everyone is new
  • Clean and new
  • New kitchen with modern appliances
  • Built to current building requirements and local codes
  • Excitement of “building your own home”
  • Make your own design and color selections

Used Home

  • Do not meet today’s lifestyle requirements
  • Needs more repairs and hidden defects are not uncovered until after purchase is complete
  • Seldom, if ever, warranted by the sellers
  • Old neighborhoods tend to deteriorate after many years, and equity stagnates rather than grows
  • Neighbors in existing communities have alreadyformed friendships and it may be hard to quickly establish friendships
  • Additional money may be needed to assume loans or cover closing costs
  • Older, outdated kitchen
  • May not be built to current building requirements and local codes
  • Living with someone else’s decisions/tastes
*** The money you spend after the purchase of your home to make the repairs is “Out of Pocket” and can not be paid for through the loan !
